A New Perspective on the Term "Yo-Yo Relationships"

I (32M) recently told my girlfriend (22F) I viewed our relationship like a yo-yo. As I laid in bed halfway across the world talking to this wonder of a woman, I imagined what life would be like with her. I imagined her like the Sun, majestically anchoring the Solar System which in this case would be our home. I, by nature of my job, would be around the world for short periods. And like the Planets, I would be in her Orbit, her radiant glow reaching out to touch me. As this played out in my head, the thought of a yo-yo occurred to me. I would be the yo-yo, the free end of the string knotted around her finger while gravity (my job) pulled me to the ground. And like the yo-yo’s inherent rotational energy winding the disks back to the hand, my girlfriend’s heart would guide me home. No matter if the spin is long or short, the yo-yo always returns back to the hand. I espoused that my feelings for her would always draw me back to her arms, no matter if the yo-yo was thrown up, down, sideways, or rolling on the ground. Not long after I told her this, I was duly informed that a yo-yo relationship actually existed, but commonly associated with an emotional roller coaster of highs and lows, being hot and cold – a lack of commitment. Dating games are stupid, and I’m here to offer couples a positive spin on a term that is negatively perceived in today’s dating scene.

1. You are not a plaything. You have real emotions. You are a sensitive creature who feels. You are not disposable, tossed to the side and neglected once I have had my fun. No, you gave me a sacred part of yourself, and it is my duty to protect and cherish what you have given me. Putting you through emotional roller coasters is a betrayal…of you.

2. I want you as you are. I don’t want you at a distance. Sculptures and monuments look amazing from a distance, but the real story of art is only seen up close where flaws and blemishes reflect the dedication of the artist and the passage of time. You are a creature of magnificent beauty, and like the art of old, you are unique, shaped by your experiences. I want you as you are today, and the you who you will become tomorrow.

3. I want you around. You are a priority. You are not an option. Your heart, your dreams, and your happiness are now a part of my dreams, my happiness, and for sure my heart. I want to see the world from your eyes, feel what you feel, and together create a story of us.

4. I choose you. A romantic and life partner should be someone we choose out of the see of choices. Commitment remains so long as we each continuously choose each other, with open and honest communication. I choose you, and I will wake each morning and go to sleep each night repeating to myself that I chose the most amazing woman this world has to offer me. Truth is predicated upon individual perception. Quite simply, you are my truth. I have no doubts about you because to acknowledge doubt is to introduce the illusion of alternative choices. I do not have doubts about us, because I know where my choice lies – in the string around your finger.

TL;DL: We might not be the most perfect couple, the most Instagram-worthy, or even the most interesting, but no matter where I am in this world, like a yo-yo I will return to you.

A man who plays with a woman's emotions is lost and doesn't deserve her heart.

What are your thoughts on this topic? Do you think the term "yo-yo" can ever be viewed in a positive connotation as it relates to dating?
