After 4 years SO “needs some time.” Is this ever not code for “I want to break up?”

Hi reddit. I know all people are different and there’s no set answer to this question. I’m just at the end of my rope processing it alone and with friends who might be biased by their close connection with me/not wanting to see me hurt and would like some opinions from strangers. Here’s the situation:

My partner and I (32 y/o F and 34 y/o M) have been together for four years. We’ve known each other for much longer than that. Up until now there has been actually nothing bad or wrong in our relationship at all. Of course after that long every now and then there’s a discussion or frustration, but nothing as big as a real fight, and definitely never even a thought of breaking up. A year ago I moved 2 hours away for work, and the plan was he would follow once he tied up some loose ends back home (I had to make the decision to move very quickly because of the job in question, so waiting was not an option). Then COVID hit and that few months was extended to more like a year. The distance has put some strain on our relationship. Nothing huge, no trust issues or anything, just the natural stress that comes from maintaining something from far away and feeling like in some ways we really can’t be there for each other right now, which has taken a toll because he’s had a very rough year in his personal life outside our relationship. Over the past couple of months we’ve both been bottling up a lot of those feelings and it’s gotten emotionally intense to the point we ended up falling into a conversation about whether we should just break up.

After a week to think on it, we had a very long talk about why it happened, and what needed to change about the way we were in the distance setting to feel good together again, and also some insecurities about moving to be with someone or to have someone move to be with you. All good productive talking. When we left that conversation it felt like we were in a much better place and discussing how to work things out, but he also said he just wasn’t sure what he wanted because he was feeling overwhelmed and it seemed like a huge amount to “unpack” so needed some time alone.

I’ve been giving him that time, because we have a lot of history together and a lot of trust, and I guess he’s built up a fair amount of relationship “cred” such that I feel like I should try to give him what he’s asking for—but I’m also 32 and have been down this road before and can’t shake the feeling that maybe all I’m supporting is him phasing out of the relationship and dealing with the pain that’s always involved in ending something long. I’ve had bad experiences with things like “breaks” in the past, and while this isn’t an official “break” (we aren’t seeing other people, just taking physical space from each other) it feels similar.

What do you guys think? Does anyone have experience with something like this that DIDN’T just end in someone telling you they want to break up? Has anyone DONE this and not ended up breaking up after?
