Are coworkers actually an option we should consider?

So I (24/m) am thinking of asking out a coworker(20/F). I have mixed feeling about how and if I should ask this woman out. So I asked a female friend and a male friend who both did this.. Surprisingly the female friend said go for becuase she wants to see me happy..while the guy friend said don't do to becuase I shouldn't date where I get paid. Which is a valid point.

This lead me to think about why I'm 50/50 split on this… becuase people do it all the time. About the only thing that changed this process is the internet broading the reach people have. And I've been thinking why is it so bad these days to date within a workplace. We all want to maximize potential dating options. Why is the workplace dating conversation such a tabboo idea these days. Half of the reasons people give has more to do with either positive vs negative thinking and then we rationize for or against work place dating.

Now this is where I might loose some people. We all know dating in the workplace when social circles were smaller aka pre-internet no one really batted an eyelash. It sure seems that the arguments today for or against has more to do with trying to filter and maximizing the control of who approaches and how they approach a woman. Reverse the roles and really no one cares about this topic.

It makes me wonder how legit the argument really is. I'd like to hear others thoughts, criticism, or add-ons.
