So i don’t want to make this any longer than it has to be, but a week ago, i (19M) told a girl (19F) that i liked her, and after some nervous chats we had a more serious talk about it. I should mention that we’ve known each other for about 8 months, and formed a very close friendship over that time, especially more recently in quarantine ironically. So anyways, to summarize, we admitted we both had feelings for each other, but for reasons such as my family expectations and religious upbringing, a relationship or a ‘more than friends’ situation wouldn’t work, and it is best not to have anything secret and we also don’t want to risk losing our friendship. She said that she thinks it is best to stay close friends and that in the future, we perhaps could be something more, when we are more mature and can make decisions for ourselves (mainly me), because you never know what could happen.
While there is no doubt that we will stay friends and get even closer, i can’t help but think on how i’d feel if she were to get a bf within the next year or so. This of course only applies if i still have these feelings until then, otherwise i wouldn’t imagine it would bother me. I guess there is no other way but to wait and see what happens. If she gets a bf, and lets say she splits with him then comes back to me, i wouldn’t know what to feel.
Maybe i’m overthinking or looking too far into the future, and maybe the sense of ‘in the future’ has given me hope. I also try to tell myself if she gets a bf, she would have moved on feelings wise, and i should too, but our friendship is genuine and valuable, so i can’t stop seeing or talking to her. Our friendship wasn’t really born out of attraction or feelings. Maybe it makes me selfish to think this way, but it’s whats on my mind because i know that for now we will probably just stay friends, which i am fine with, but at this moment, the thought of her with someone else is upsetting, as i’m sure it would be for anyone, especially since i can’t exactly ‘secure’ a relationship that easy due to my family.
I don’t really have a question, but perhaps if anyone has had a similar situation or some advice that would help, it would be much appreciated, even though everyone is different with their feelings and experiences. Ultimately, i would love to stay best friends with her, no matter what happens, we’ve both put a lot of effort into our friendship and i would hate to lose it over something like this. I should also mention i have never had any previous relationship or experiences with girls before. This is a first for me.
