Is computer science the ultimate dating killer?

Hi, I’m male, 26, studying CS and am currently in my last year in university. I went to university right after school, and never had any dating or mating opportunities so I’m still a virgin, like, I suspect, many of my male fellow students. I am often reading about CS people having issues with dating, so I wonder if there could be a systematic issue? There are a few hints for why that could be the case:

  • Studying CS is pretty demanding and time consuming (at least at my university), so there is not much free time to date anyway
  • Probably the field of study with the lowest women/men ratio. Honestly I think I only met 3 or 4 female fellow students during all those years. So there is a low probability of meeting your future partner in a course.
  • Since I never had any female friends, it seems that I am less relaxed with women and don’t have any experience with casual flirting or “just figuring out if you might be a good match”. When I talk to a woman in my age then it’s usually because I’m trying to approach her in that very moment (which happens very rarely).
  • That might sound stereotypical, but many people I know spend most of their time in front of a PC, either for studying or for their hobbies, so social conversation is not exactly a strength for many of us. “Just talk casually talk with as many people as possible” might be easy for very social people, but unfortunately not for me.
  • Many people in their twenties seem to like meeting new people in bars or at parties, but neither me nor anyone of my friends like beer, alcohol or loud music in general. Almost all CS people I know are rather thoughtful, introverted people, not extroverted partygoers.
  • If we finally graduate, we will still end up working in a demanding field that is strongly dominated by males.

I found that people recommend online dating all the time. I tried it but it was an incredibly bad experience overall (70% no replies, 10% rude, 10% one-word responses, extremely time consuming overall etc.). Most strikingly, I have no idea which kind of woman is “my type” or what I am even looking for. Many women over 25 seem to be looking for a long-term partner to have kids with, while I am still waiting for my first kiss. I could not commit to a LTR at this point, but I’m also not the type for “casual hookup”. I just want a hot girlfriend like the kids back in school, without having to commit to anything.

(Ironically, since I am specializing my studies on data privacy and data mining, I also have a big problem exposing private details about myself on dating apps, which does not make it simpler I guess. But I know surprisingly many fellow students who do not care about privacy so that might not be an issue for everyone)

So, my question is, are there any computer science people here who have experienced similar issues? If you succeeded in dating life, what was your solution? For everyone else, what would you recommend me or other people who have similar issues?
