Did I get rejected or is she scared of committing over the summer? Or both?

Hi everyone! Over thinker here. We’re both in university and summer break just started so we’re now on opposite sides of the country for a few months. I (23M) went on 3 dates with her (21F), starting in mid May, and they all went really well. She initiated a lot of the physical contact and genuinely seemed to enjoy my company. We both knew the break was coming up and that meant we met up pretty intensively over the last two weeks we had together.

As we got closer to the exams (and the break) we talked less compared to earlier but whenever we talked it was all good, but we didn’t get the chance to meet as often. After the exam my group of friends were hanging out in an area and her group showed up to that area later, so she texted that she was in the same place and she introduced me to her friends. After chatting with her and her friends for a while I left to join my crew who were going somewhere else. We kept sending a few snaps back and forth that night until she all of a sudden sent me a message saying she doesn’t know 100% how she feels about us but said she’d wanna go for a walk the next day to talk to me about it.

We meet up the next day and start off talking normally like nothing special was going on. Then she changed the topic and said something along the lines of “I don’t want you to go around all summer expecting us to keep dating once we’re back next semester“. I kind of agreed cause that makes sense, and told her that my plan was never to ask her to be exclusive this early on. I asked if she had enjoyed meeting me and would have wanted to keep meeting up if the summer break wasn’t upon us, both of which she replied yes to. She thinks I’m a really sweet guy and that we’re similar in a lot of ways, but then mentioned some less positive things. She said maybe I was being “too nice” and that things haven’t really felt “exciting”, and that we haven’t really laughed that much together.

I’m a pretty calm/laidback guy and I got somewhat nervous whenever I met her, which makes these traits even stronger to the point where I can understand I’m being perceived as a little boring. Apart from that I’m really good socially with her and everyone else too. I explained this to her and told her that she had only seen a few sides of me yet and that if we’d spend more time together she discover the pieces of the puzzle she was missing. She was understanding and agreed that 3 dates isn’t really enough to get the full picture of someone. Regarding that things haven’t felt exciting I told her that considering the limited amount of time made me take a lot of initiative, cause she mentioned that it got too serious too fast for her taste. It’s weird though, on our way back she told me she really enjoyed that I was taking the lead. She also mentioned her friends liked me and that she had told all of them, and her parents, about me. But she also said she is very open about things with them so I’m not sure what I could make of that.

We left our walk agreeing to be friends over the summer and stay in touch. She said she definitely was open to meeting me next semester but that we’d have to start fresh with open minds and no assumptions that it has to lead to anything serious. This rhymes well with her feeling that it got too serious too fast and her desire to let things progress more naturally (which maybe is what she meant with things not being “exciting”?).

I told my friends about the situation and they seem to think it went as good as it could have gone, but I’d like a third pair of eyes to help me out with this. I do think that if she wasn’t interested in meeting me ever again, she would have told me. She could have just told me this over text or simply ghosted me

What do you think? Did I get friendzoned? Is she scared of committing through the summer this early on but is still interested? Did I get flat out rejected?
