My friend said he has been dating a girl fo 6 month bt not official. How is that possible?

Usually if i date someone, i either like them early or not it seems (my experience). Some people i just click with and i like them and want to see them more and date/make it official after a few monhts. How can someone date someone for so long and not make it official? is this a common thing? i’ve never done this. Only time i cna think of was when i had a “Freinds with benefits” for 6 months. But we never really dated, literally went out on 3-4 dates and the entire time of that 6 months we slept together once a week.
