Experience as an Asian Guy on Dating Apps

Heya,

I’d like to have a cordial discussion on dating apps specifically for Asian male in the United States.

So I first started using tinder back when I started college in 2014 and since then has expanded to using Bumble, Coffee Meets Bagel, and Hinge. During my I guess 6 years of playing the dating app game, I slowly recognized that my non Asian guy friends tend to get way more matches than I do. And no offense to my friends but they’re pretty average looking but their defining factors were colored eyes, blonde, >5ft9 (my height), and were again non-Asian. As with me, I’m half white half asian, brown eyes, dark brown hair, and average body built so I know I’m not that bad looking haha. Anyways I had multiple chances of seeing their profile, who they matched with, and how the date went and generally speaking found that many of their matches didn’t really have much things in common other than “hookups” which is obvious mainly with tinder but for the sake of this discussion I’m going to focus on the dating aspects. So naturally like many netizens, I google my situation and apparently it is a thing with how Asian men are micro-discriminated because of how Hollywood and western culture portrays us as nerdy, side kick, not sexy, that funny oriental dude, pretty boys, etc. I tried my best not to portray myself in that stereotype by focusing on fashion, posting active / interesting photos and what not but at the end of the day my face screams “Asian” and “dorky” written all over it. Further, reading multiple articles and actual sociological research done on this topic definitely messed with my self-esteem of being “un-wanted”. Survey says even Asian girls prefer not to date within their own ethnic group so that right there tells you how difficult it is being Asian guy in the West. Let’s be clear here, I know many guys and girls feel that way on dating apps of being “unwanted” but this is tad bit different because we Asian guys are set up in a different disadvantage.

Now comparing back to my matches, the ones I match with (the few haha like maybe 3-5 per month) tend to be those who have Asian fetish / preference or assume immediately that I’m a die hard kpop, k-drama, anime, nintendo, and everything Asian fan. I do subscribe to those things but there’s much more that I like / want to talk about. I did match with very few who saw me beyond my race so I do appreciate that but that’s like super rare. I guess what I want to say is dating in general is definitely complicated and difficult but me and my ethnicity facing huge disadvantage already puts us in very narrow position.

Any thoughts on this?

Quarantine Dating Caution!!

What’s up Kings and Queens,

I have been preaching to my friends to be careful while looking for their potential Significant Other via dating apps like (Bumble and Hinge) because it seems like many girls / guys are matching and talking to you for few weeks because they’re just outright bored / need attention. I’ve heard of sad endings to these kind of situations via this forum and memes but did not think I’d fall victim to it as well.

So I matched with this girl on Hinge 4 weeks ago who lives 1 hour away from my apartment. The first few days of responses by her were spotty but as soon as we moved onto texting we were talking on the daily. She was super receptive and even had 2 facetime dates that lasted 6 hour each oof. Because of the current climate of COVID-19 and her living with immuno compromised parent, meeting up was not on the table until a bit after re-opening.

While talking, we were hitting off great but certain things I noticed that was a bit odd was

  1. Would never compliment me whenever I send a selfie; she didn’t send one back unless I asked for it
  2. Thanked me every time I complimented her but that’s about it
  3. Never reciprocated to my flirty comments
  4. Was receptive conversationally on text but didn’t feel anything purely genuine
  5. Bad texter with usually 2 text responses but talked so much on factime
  6. Was very confident during facetime dates and talked 60% of the time

On the 4th week I decided to let her know that it’s been great talking with her so far and that I started to like her. The reason I said that is because I couldn’t figure out if she was interested in me so I needed a vibe check. Few minutes after I said that, she turned off her Read Receipts and responded with the following:

“I appreciate u telling me that and I appreciate ur honesty and being open, but I don’t know quite yet how I feel about it since we haven’t gotten to meet! I just think it would be difficult under the circumstances cuz of the whole pandemic and the distance that would be between us. Just trying to be realistic about it now!”

I kinda half expected this type of response and what she said is completely fair. The 6 odd points mentioned above made total sense at that moment. I don’t think there was any intent from her end to continue this for potential romance despite the 2 face time dates we’ve had and me trying my best to keep conversation genuine, meaningful, and fun.

I then told her no worries and I completely get it but at the end of the day it still lowkey hurt so I wished her goodnight to end the conversation for that night. I was expecting some kind of response back but it’s been a 3rd day since and no response. As I pondered about what has unfolded, it kinda lowered my self esteem a bit because I was being used as just someone to talk to and it was a meaningless relationship. I’ve had fair amount of being just a penpal and ghosted but this is a new low just because it lasted for 4 weeks OOF. Further I am disappointed in myself for being bamboozled because I know I knew better to handle something like this… this sucks man haha.

So Kings and Queens, I know the search for that special someone is ongoing during this pandemic but be careful when talking to someone because they might just be using you for conversation and it’s pretty rampant these days.

TLDR; Talked to a girl from Hinge for 4 weeks on the daily and facetime dated twice but was bamboozled when I shared my interest / feelings with her then got sincere rejection as well as being ghosted
