So I [M22] have been in a few fairly serious relationships in my life, the most recent having lasted 2 years and ending in January this year. They have all ended fairly badly and I am starting to realise it’s because of me. I have genuinely loved everyone I’ve been with and still care deeply for them but I found myself doing things like: – Getting upset when they drink – Getting upset when they go out with friends – Believing they are cheating on me when I know they never would – Being critical of their hobbies and passions – Sulking when denied sex – Being dismissive of their emotional needs – Having a very my-way-or-the-highway approach to any disagreement – Withholding affection or giving the silent treatment to get things that I want
I have NEVER done anything that would be remotely considered physical abuse and I have never yelled at, sworn at or threatened a SO but, looking back at the way I have acted, I have been quite manipulative and I can absolutely understand why my relationships ended.
I really don’t want to be like this but I do these things either without realizing or potentially while justifying them, and only realize how wrong they are afterwards.
I am well aware how much of a douche I am and any hate I get is honestly deserved but if anyone has any ideas for how to be a better person that makes people’s lives better rather than worse, or even how to predict and prevent myself from engaging in toxic behaviors before they happen, please please let me know.
I don’t want to get in any relationship again until I can be a good person.
TL:DR: I have realized that I am toxic in relationships and I really want to change. Any advice please??
