A "date" with an EXTREMELY anxious, shy guy: opinions?

Hey, guys, I’m a 22yo woman and I just think a lot about this one situation that happened to me when I was 18. I want to know your opinion about if I did that guy good or not.

We used to have Latin class together in college. The group was small, everyday it was so damn fun to be there with everybody, and he was one of the people, but he had never talked to me before and I didn’t even know his name nor had ever tried to talk to him either, because he was extremely quiet and looked kinda unapproachable.

Until someday, he sent my college’s spotted page on Facebook an anonymous message about me. He talked about how fun I looked and how he would love to get to talk and know me a little better. I didn’t know it was him at first, but I was very flattered to receive such a cute, wholesome message. So I asked the admins of the page for his contact and started talking to him.

I found out who he was after some struggle, because I really couldn’t remember him at first, even though he thought I knew his name and all. So I said I was always down to know people, that he had been such a lovely guy to write those things and that we should meet to have a good ol’ conversation, to which he agreed. We met right on the next day, if I remember correctly.

He was. A complete. Mess.

I had never seen in my whole life up until then somebody so terribly anxious. He couldn’t talk, he would just mumble short sentences and stutter A LOT. His hands were shaking like freaking jazz hands and he couldn’t look at me at all. It was freaking worrying! I remember him trying to say hi and displaying all those at once.

I was so shocked that I grabbed his hands in mine right away, made his eyes meet mjne and said “HEY, IT’S OK, DON’T BE NERVOUS! WE’LL JUST TALK! We are classmates, no need to shake so much! Come on, let’s sit.”

It was clearly because of me. I’ll be honest, it felt good for a moment to be such a great deal for someone. But that thought vanished quickly, as I began to think how would I ever be able to make him feel a little more confident, just enough to talk at least, or look at me. How to make him not be afraid of me, you know.

I tried to be very laid back. I’d ask him questions and talk about me a lot, so he wouldn’t feel in the spotlight and forced to speak. After some time, he managed to look at me and say some things. He was a good guy, and the conversation was ok after he saw I could be chill and calm too. He even tried to impress me at some point, which was not succesful at all but it made me think he was feeling a little more confident, so fair game. I think we spent a whole hour together. And talked a lot after all.

When time came to go home, we faced each other to say goodbye, right? In Brazil, we HUG, say “have a good one” and leave. He was extremely nervous again because it was THAT time and he didn’t know what to expect, I suppose. But what I did was exactly what I would normally do. I hugged him (and it was a very heartfelt hug, I really felt so bad for him), he hugged me back and I felt like literally in the middle of an earthquake. He wouldn’t stop shaking, no matter for how long I hugged him. I left and he was stuck watching me go.

We never really talked again. I felt like he was following me one day after that and it made me feel really scared, ngl. But the aftermath was, he even started saying some things during class, you know.

So, I guess it was good for him? I like to thing I gave him a little of a happy moment? But at the same time, it just looked like he was in such a big distress… I don’t know if I did the right thing, or if he liked that at all. Maybe he thought I was interested in him and I broke his heart even more? What do you think?

IF YOU WERE HIM, WHAT WOULD YOU DO OR THINK?
