Am I letting someone great slip away?

I’m a 24(F) living in Georgia (the last state to issue a shelter in place order, and the first to announce reopening . . . I think) This is my first reddit post I’m sorry it’s so long >.<

A couple of months before the pandemic, I matched with this really cool guy (24m) on an online dating app. We clicked really well and liked each other a lot. Once the shelter in place orders started, he and I had to stop seeing each other in person (I live with my parents and my dad is diabetic and not in the best health- even common colds are harsh on him). We also now have 30 miles of distance /about an hour drive between our homes (our jobs are much closer – 20 minutes apart when we saw each other it mostly after work). We kept in touch through text and Snapchat for several weeks and then we broke things off for a couple of weeks earlier this month, and he came back saying he still thought about me and wanted another chance. I did want to give him another chance, but I had just been potentially exposed to COVID through my dad and brother’s exposure. My dad and brother are both okay, their boss still asked them to go to work and they can’t be tested unless they have symptoms. I had a couple of symptoms over the weekend, but they went away (it makes me think I might have just had allergies) and I’m eligible to be tested today through a clinic at my job, so I won’t know for sure if I’m carrying it until next week. Additionally I was overwhelmed with the distance between us So we came to the conclusion that this might not be the best time since we have so much distance between us and my uneasiness at that time to meet up.

I spend a lot of time single by choice and working on myself (which I feel like is another reason I become confused when relationship become hard as I don’t have a lot of experience with them) and I have a hard time finding guys I connect with the way I was able to with him. He’s driven, funny, sweet and caring, and he really likes me too. I was in a bit of a toxic relationship for a while, and we felt so . . healthy?

After another small round of texts we sent each other after concluding that dating right now might not be best for right now, it seems like not talking or being with each other isn’t what we both want. I fear I’m making a mistake and letting someone amazing slip away when we maybe just have to sit down and see if we can look for potential solutions that work for both of us before making this decision.

When we were together it felt right and I think we’re both afraid to lose that, but this is also a very confusing time and we’re confused about what we can even do. I also don’t want to risk hurting him and getting his (and my) hopes up or confusing ourselves even more and making this harder and more painful if it doesn’t work through initiating and continuing a back and forth that doesn’t go anywhere.

Once I confirm I’m negative (not gonna try to do anything or go anywhere before that), should I try to make this work and just be cautious? or should I wait and trust that he’ll still be there once things get better? (when will things even get better though) It seems like we’re both willing to accept this for right now and are crossing our fingers hoping this all passes soon.
