Seriously. I (23M) had this issue arise again and again in my first serious relationship and I didn't understand it the way I do now. When you're apologizing to a partner, or arguing, or whatever, just remember the famous GOT quote, "Everything before the word 'but' is meaningless"
It cheapens any apology, and sometimes you need to trust your partner to have the introspection and maturity to realize their own faults, and to admit them in response to your apology. Nothing would sour any makeup conversations after a fight for me than being told "Sorry for what I did, BUT *insert reason they felt justified to take the initial action*"
On the flip side, when you're being apologized to, you deserve an apology that's without conditions or explanations. "I'm sorry I did *X thing*, it was not right of me to do"
Maybe I'm alone on this, or people can offer their perspective, but it's the one thing I've really start to pay attention to.
