Breakup Etiquette

I’ve (30F) have been dating exclusively (32m) for a few months now but we have never specified if we are in a relationship. I’ve slowly come to the realization that this relationship is not what’s best for me and I should end things. I almost feel bad going in and just breaking things off blindly. Do you typically try to give someone a heads up saying you want to “talk” before ending things? How do you typically go about it?
