Could have been(s)

I don't know if this sub is more appropriate or marriage, or whether I convey my question correctly. But best friends of the opposite genders – are they the "could have been"s of the past? E.g. the bride's best male buddy could actually have been her husband if not for wrong timing or other circumstances. Is this usually the case?
