So I have been dating this girl in medical school for about 3 months now. (we are classmates) Everything is going well and I already feel like she may be the one. We have not gotten to the first argument stage yet, but I am confident in our ability to resolve our problems. However, she happens to be the youngest in a highly accomplished family that included three sisters (all doctors) and parents (also Doctors). I live in the South where social class seems to matter a lot more than I wish it did.
I am a first-generation Asian American. I moved here as a toddler so I only really have every known the U.S as home. I graduated from a Service Academy, current Officer in the Military, and currently going to medical school. I have absolutely no debt, however, I owe 9 years to the military after medical school. My parents were restaurant owners who worked so hard to achieve their version of the American Dream. While I am proud of all my accomplishments and those of my parents, I cannot help but feel anxious that I cannot live up to her expectations for a partner.
I have always been extremely self-conscious being an Asian male attracted to mostly Caucasian women. I am in the dating game for the long-term relationship since my future is pretty much already set-up for me by the military. I just do not know how to feel about the situation I am in.
I know doubt causes gaps in the relationship and this sentiment I possess will hurt our relationship if I do not resolve it. I am currently seeking help from a psychiatrist to try and figure out how I can find closure for my problem. I really do love this girl and I can see myself with her for the rest of my life. I just want to make sure that I am not self-sabotaging the relationship with my unconscious predispositions. I guess my question is what do I do? I consider myself and relatively self-aware person and I want to do anything I can to better myself so make this relationship work.
