Don’t try to be their friends first. If you like them ask them out.

A few months ago, I met this girl at a networking happy hour. She had just moved into my area, and mentioned how she wanted to make friends in the area before she started dating anyone. So I decided to ask her to hang out with my friends the following day. After that we became really good friends, as it turns out we have a ton in common. We had plenty of long intimate talks, and we about relationships, sex, dating, and naturally I developed feelings for her.

About two months into the friendship, I told her, I was kind of into her, and she told me didn’t want to wreck the friendship, and she didn’t see me that way. I was disappointed, but cool with it. Like I really was going to be content with being just friends. However, she began flirting with me. A Lot. Like all my friends assumed we were dating, and she’d come over to my place just to watch Netflix. Then she’d say or do something that would scare me from making a move.

Right before quarantine happened, she told me she began seeing someone. She had been flirting with me so much, I really thought I had a shot with her. Since quarantine she’s reached out and called me like 5 times, I’ve responded , but I’ve been careful not to initiate, because I know I need to move on. Last week she even asked if I wanted to take her roomate’s room and move in with her. I made up an excuse, but truth is I couldn’t handle living with her, and seeing her new guy in the morning.

So moral of the story, don’t be like me. I was hoping I could slowly win her over, and now I feel used. I know that’s not fair. She doesn’t owe me anything. I just can’t handle that she could like me so much, but not have feelings for me. Now I might have to end a relationship with someone I care about, and she won’t even understand why. Starting off as friends is never a good idea.
