I met my girlfriend online, and when we first met I asked if she had a guy (bf), to which she replied no. She was in fact in a FWB arrangement, but made no mention of it.
About 9 months into our LDR relationship, I found out she had a FWB. I broke up with her and she gave the reason that I had never asked her officially to be her girlfriend. While true, I never had the exclusive talk with her, but from my perspective it was very much implied from how we behaved with each other. Talking everyday, wishing each other Happy Valentine's and getting gifts. I did ask some questions that hinted at exclusivity but never being quite direct, and I thought she would have grasped what I felt about our relationship.
So that was probably a mistake on my part, and a misunderstanding also. She admitted to being very selfish and not asking what we were. We are now back together. So I'd like to ask, is there some kind of requirement in the exclusive talk, is it about a few magical words like "be my girlfriend", "let's be exclusive", or is there no hard rule to it? Because I think if we aren't very precise with our words it could lead to the other party's ability to use it as an excuse.
