First time really trying to “date around” as a 25F. I’m confused on a few things?

I’ve been on dates, but years ago, and my ex never took me out. We dated for four years and broke up eight months ago. So I’ve never “dated around.” I joined a dating app, deleted it multiple times because I just hate the whole concept, and last time when I reinstalled, I started talking to this guy. We’ve been chatting for a couple of weeks over text message, and we’ve gotten breakfast twice now after work (we work nights and opposite schedules, so it’s hard). First date was so-so, we paid separately. He asked me out again for breakfast today, same thing about paying, but the date was much better, more relaxed and with less awkward pauses. For people that have been awake for 20+ hours at a time, I think this is solid ground ? Also, I think it says a lot that he wants to get together even after working hard all night.

I guess because I have zero experience with this kind of thing, how weird is it that he hasn’t paid or offered? Clearly I can afford my $4 bagel, but I do have standards. I asked a friend her opinion, and she basically said that he’s most likely dating around and/or been burned about $ in the past, so maybe he’s waiting to invite me to dinner/a real date-date in order to pick up the tab? I wasn’t sure how common this was. I personally am OK with it right now, since we are basically strangers.

With that being said, how long would you wait before you expected a true “pick me up, take me out” kind of date? He has the next week off, and so do I, so I really feel like if he hasn’t taken me out properly by next week (schedules match) then I need to bounce? I feel like I find one thing to focus on and I can extrapolate it, so I’m trying to be more open minded without being walked all over.

Tl;dr Been out a couple times with a guy who hasn’t paid, what’s the norm for casual dating with a questionable trajectory?
