Friends first then dating?

I was hanging out with my old college friends and we were talking about our dating lives etc. My guy friend says look, you need to be friends with a guy first then date.

And I love that idea! But how is that possible?

I suppose there are ppl with differing opinions but I’ve heard from a lot of guys that they won’t really be friends with a girl unless there’s at least some chance that it can be more. Whereas girls can be friends with a guy that she doesn’t intend on dating or sleeping with. If that’s true then it’s the girl who keeps the distance or it developing into something more.

With that being said let’s say I find new hobbies, meet new ppl and coincidentally a guy. If we become friends and there is that interest, then what do I say if he asks me out? Am I supposed to say no so that we can be friends first and then he assumes I’m not interested then finding someone else?

At least in my experience I’ve made guy friends who are either gay or I was in a relationship at the time so any guy I met that was cool just stayed as a friend. Those friendships happened naturally but I’m confused how you actively seek out a friendship with the opposite gender while single to later on date.

I hope this makes sense but I’m not understanding the logistics lol plz give me your perspective
