Have you ever rejected someone due to not feeling ready for a serious relationship?

We became really close friends, at the time she was moving to the city, got a new job, divorced her husband, all at the same time. We met up a lot, we kissed, things seemed pretty intimate and going well. Relationship defining talk comes during a drunken night, she admits she has feelings for me, I confess the same, however she asks if we could stay at this casual level for now as her life is a mess and she needs to get her head straight before getting into anything serious. She said she experienced something very unique with me that she has never before and is afraid of fucking it all up. I fucked up and told her I would like something serious instead of letting things develop by themselves. So in the end we agreed to dial back to being friends so noone gets hurt emotionally. She said she is afraid if we started dating at the moment, she would do something that could destroy everything between us beyond repair (she wanted to sleep around I guess).

We are still friends and talk a ton, used to talk 24/7. As we let things cool off I proceeded to look elsewhere and she looked for another casual relationship. My Tinder dates fell through, she apparently found a casual partner which eventually developed into something more.

What do you think, was she honest or basically she just “let me down easy”? Did this happen to anyone else or more precisely have you ever done something like this?
