I've been talking to this man since March. We've sparingly spent time together during quarantine. We've been getting to know one another pretty well, good traits and not so good ones. A trait of his, as a result of trauma and being mistreated, is that he's not a very affectionate person. I'm very affectionate, as my love languages are quality time and physical touch. He voiced how much he needed affection, as he never got it growing up. I didn't either, but I make an active effort because it's important in any relationship.
Oftentimes I feel like I'm the one who is always initiating hugs, or kissing. He's generally pretty detached and distant, but he'll always reciprocate my kisses and will occasionally pull me in for a hug and I've sat on his lap no problem. Yesterday we went to run in the park and sat to hang for a little bit, and he barely looked in my direction for the most part.
I told him how I felt about it, and he said "Smh you keep saying that I'm sorry you feel like that I'm just not like other guys you deal with and be all in your face & on you like that… That's never been me. Just give it some time if you're willing, if you wanna give up on me that's you." That honestly took me aback and I got upset and basically said we we're a good fit and that he was basically saying "It is what it is" and that he didn't try to understand how I was feeling about how detached he was.
He said, "We never really talk about it & I can't blame it on no one but I never got affection like that as a child. I grew up fucked up and mistreated and no that's not an excuse it's just the real. I'm willing to learn… I can only learn how to accept it and give it from here.. Can't point the finger at me for that.."
While I'm understanding, there's only so long as an adult that you can blame your detachment on your childhood without taking action to improve and try to heal. I like him, but I'm not sure if he's taking how I feel into account, and wanting to take accountability. If that's the case, he's not ready to give me what I want yet.. I'm torn, I also want to be patient with him, as people in my life are patient with me every day while I get better at healing my detachment every day. Advice?
tl;dr – Guy I like is unaffectionate and doesn't initiate affection and is often cold and distant because of lack of affection growing up. Should I be patient with him or find someone more secure in affection?
