How do you differentiate disinterest and comfort?

I (21F) have been dating my boyfriend (23M) for around 5 months. In the beginning, we used to text throughout the day and hang out/ video chat 2-3 times a week. He used to be very eager about spending time with me However, the past month, I've been feeling like he only responds to my texts because he feels obligated to, not because he wants to. We haven't hung out in person or video chatted the past month. I initiated the last few times we called or hung out in person. I know it's bad to keep track of things like this, but I felt like I was putting in more effort than him. I stopped asking to spend time with him because i wanted to see if he would initiate anything himself. He hasn't. Some friends have told me that it may just be that he feels comfortable with me now, but I've honestly been feeling like he's lost interest in me. I want to either communicate this with him in person or honestly end things with him. However, a small part of me wants to wait and see if he will ask to see me before I have to have this conversation with him.
