I am aware he has been dealing with a lot of personal things like school/career stuff & mental health, and in addition to that just has a tendency to be absent-minded and forgetful. We had been seeing each other for a few months and it seemed genuine – we have mutual friends who have vouched for him and he's all around a really sweet guy. That being said, we started seeing each other just a few weeks before quarantine started which was poor timing. So I didn't see him in person for almost 2 months. During this time his responses to my texts were really delayed, and I got a little worried. He ignored my texts several times, or didn't reply for days (when I know he is constantly on his phone). Then, I saw him for the first time after quarantine a few weeks ago and things went great. But that was short-lived, and more recently he has again been ignoring my texts to make plans with him. A few days ago I got fed up and basically ended things over text (I was perfectly civil, but firm). I pointed out all the things he did that he probably didn't realize were bothering me. He got back to me with a sincere apology, took full accountability, and admitted that he hasn't been feeling well and has been wanting to be by himself more, that he wasn't ghosting me but was just taking time for himself, etc. He also said that he wasn't just messing around with me and was actually emotionally invested. However, he didn't even try to work things out. He just basically accepted the goodbye and.. that was that.
And now that I've cooled off.. I just feel really horrible about how things went down. I feel like I could have done more to understand his situation before ending things abruptly. I'm tempted to call him to talk this out and let him know that I do want to try and make this work but i'm not sure if it's a good idea? Especially since he didn't even try to take me back which makes me wonder how much he really likes me.
My biggest worry is that I'll get rejected, honestly. I also have social anxiety so I'm just imagining him thinking I'm weird or desperate if I call him.
