"I don’t give my number out straight away/to strangers, let’s chat on here first"

Do any guys hear this quite a bit? I find that if a girl won't give you her number the first time you ask, she will never give it to you.

I have never had a situation where they say "let's chat on here for a bit first" then after chatting for a while, they give me their number. I either get ignored, or we chat for a bit and then she still won't give me her number.

It's rather depressing because it shows that every girl acts extremely similar – giving the same excuse for why she doesn't want to give you her number. I would prefer if they were just honest and said "sorry I'm not interested in you". Now when I hear this excuse, I stop talking because I know it means they're not interested and will never give me their number.
