I feel like being too nice always comes to bite you back.

I was talking to this girl I met at a mutual friends birthday. We were talking for 3 months like EVERY DAY. But, just as I thought that I might be developing feelings for her, I started pulling away by trying to talk less but she always kept talking and it didn't work. Eventually, I started giving major hints that I might like her and when she finally got them she started pulling away and distancing herself.

I confess my feelings for her and turned out she liked someone else and when she got the hint I might like her she started pulling away. I tell her that's okay I just need to stop talking and move on before we can be some sort of friends again. During this time I lost my job and ran in to some serious financial issues. After a while, when I felt better I talked to her on the phone and turns out the guy that she liked didn't feel the same way and I could tell she was upset about it. I text her the next day and she doesn't seem interested so I leave it at that.

2 weeks pass by and I was hearing she wasn't doing well through mutual friends. I text her asking how she is and she's very responsive but I keep it short and end the convo. We talk a few times after that and have good short convos but that's about it. She's still pretty upset that it didn't work out with the guy and she's never had a proper long-term relationship.

Throughout the 3 months of talking to her I was extremely nice to her and I wasn't faking it cus I don't believe in this thing that guys need to be dicks to attract girls. I was always there for her and she literally still says that I'm always there for her but here I am rejected by her and posting this. We still talk a bit but idk what to do should I just stop talking or what? Deep down I still want to try for a relationship but dk how to proceed? Should I try to talk for longer periods of time and see how it flows?

TL;DR Liked a girl, she liked someone else. Didn't work out for her with that guy and now she's upset and I still want her.
