This might be a bit long. So, bear with me if you can.
So, a bit of background:
I went out with this girl for almost about a year. I wasn't looking to date at all at the time. I knew her from my Uni, but I never talked to her in real life while I was there. Then, I dropped out for various reasons, and that was that. But about a year later after I dropped out, she replied to one of my stories on Instagram. We just got to talking from there, which was a year ago, approx.
We started hangjng out, and eventually started dating (if you can call it so, because I'm not sure what we had together was a "dating" thing). We went out maybe twice a month, and we got closer. As I mentioned earlier, I wasn't looking to date anyone at that time, and neither was she. She said she replied to my story because she thought I was interesting, and I talked to her because she is beautiful, and smart from what I knew from my time at the Uni.
So.. our relationship takes off. We connected naturally. There was no "trying to impress each other" or having to try too hard for one another. She was (or 'is' rather, I don't really know how to address this anymore) really understanding, supportive and all that. And on top of that, she actually wanted to be with me. She never complained about me not doing anything for her when I didn't, but of course I did nice things whenever I could. I have severe social anxiety, and she even understood that, trying to meet in places where there wasn't much crowd and considerate stuff like that.
Time went on. Things were going great till around the nineth month. We had told that we loved each other by then (by the sixth or seventh month), and I did love her, still do. I'm not sure whether she did or not now, but I'll come back to that later. Around December of last year, she started acting withdrawn. She didn't respond to my texts as enthusiastically as she used to in the past. She started to say she didn't feel like talking anymore, and stopped saying 'I love you' or even returning it back when I said it first. But I thought this happened because this wasn't the initial stages of the relationship and it wasn't supposed to be as much filled with sparkles as when we first started going out. So, I let that be. I tried to get her into conversations like I did before, but she didn't engage at all.
So, that lack of interest in talking went on for a while. Then, after two weeks into December, she said that she needed space. She needed time to rethink our relationship and rethink her life. This was also the time when she was away from me, so I couldn't meet and try to talk to her about it. But I thought that she deserved that, and I gave her time and space. We didn't talk till the beginning of January.
January starts, and we can meet again, but she doesn't want to meet me. She keeps saying that she needs more time to thjnk and space. We start texting again, still with no interest from her side, and me trying to ask her and figure out what's going on. But she always ends with the same line; It's not you, it's me or something along the lines of that. She never blames me for anything, neither does she say what was going on.
February goes by like this, and March begins. Our birthdays are one day apart, hers is one day later than mine, and we meet both on my birthday and hers. I gave her a gift, she gave me one, that's all fine. But I don't feel the same after her birthday. She was really pushing me away from her, or herself away from me or this relationship. A week later, she has to go to her village because the lockdown starts. And this is where it all goes to shit for me.
A few weeks into the lockdown, just 11 days before what would've been our one-year anniversary, she breaks up with me. I ask for a reason, and she says that she wasn't feeling the same with me anymore. She said she didn't love me anymore, and that she was just staying in the relationship for the last four months just because she was feeling guilty about leaving me as she knew I loved her. But now, she was breaking up because she was feeling that the longer she stayed in it, the more it would've hurt me when she broke it off.
I'm absolutely heartbroken. It's been just more than a month since the break up and I've not been able to neither get her out of my head, nor come up with any good reason as to why she'd break up with me.
Now here's my problem. I don't think I got the closure that I wanted or rather, deserved. I'm struggling with a few questions in my head, and I'll ask them below:
-
Can someone just "fall out of love" with a person? Without any change in the relationship, without any external effect like a third person or someone saying something negative about me to her. Or without any fault of me, which I asked about to her multiple times so I could try and correct if I had any mistakes that I did. I ended up recieving the same response, that it wasn't my fault or not anything that I did or say.
-
Could it be possible that she misread her emotions about me? Could it be the case that she just 'liked' me instead of 'loved' me and just mistook the feelings for something else? It was her first relationship, and that's the same with me as well.
-
Should her saying "I don't love you anymore and don't have the same feelings for you" be a good enough closure for me. Am I just overthinking this and is that really a good enough reason for me to try and stop thinking about it?
