Is it ok to ask someone out when you first meet them?

I was wondering how soon is too soon. While I know it kind of depends on the situation. Can you (generally) ask a girl out if you’ve just met them and there’s enough attraction? In real life through work/school/hanging out with friends.

PS: I’m terrible at online dating but not bad in real life.
