Is there a point asking a friend out if they’ve given zero indication of interest while you’ve known them?

I've been friends with this person for about a year, we're good friends and I value that a lot. My plan was originally to try to find a way to ask around our friend group if the possibility was at all open, and work from there. Idk, try to act in a way to give some kind of warning so I could at least be sure she wasn't interested and just stop. Then… COVID. While we've had plenty of contact, the social dynamic over text and video chat is way different. I barely have an idea of how to "drop hints" before asking someone out in person, and have 0 idea of how to do it remotely. Plus, she had to move pretty far away during shelter in place, and her life direction is taking her elsewhere looking to the future. So I'm not going to be regularly seeing her anymore in person. While long distance is certainly a thing that happens, its just another confounding factor. And again, I really don't want to make her feel awkward about anything, the paramount thing to me is staying friends.

I guess what I'm getting at is, it would be a horrible idea to say anything, I just need someone else to tell me that so its not something I'm just stewing over while staring at my computer screen alone.

Quick edit: I'm 22M, she's 23F
