Is woman’s league defined by who she dates, hooks-up or has lasting relationships with?

Not everyone is happy about categorising people like this; I, however, find it useful and almost necessary to know what is my 'league' which is, as I understand it, defined by how conventionally attractive the person is, how well-adjusted he is, smart and successful… I can even reduce it to the physical attractiveness for the clarity of this question.

In other words, if I used to date very hot men but the few relationships that I had were with men who were objectively less attractive*, should I accept that it is the way things will always be for me? As I am only interested in serious relationships right now, should (a) I look for a man who is similar to my ex-boyfriends and exclude the possibility of romantic relationships with hotter people?

The other option would be to (b) continue dating more attractive men. But how would I know that my own relative unattractiveness is not the reason for not having anything serious with the guys who are hot?

*all my ex-boyfriends also had some sort of mental illness and/or emotional trauma which perhaps made them more accepting of my own issues.
