It happens when you’re not expecting it

No I don’t mean you will meet someone when you don’t expect to. I’m talking about getting over someone you thought you never would. 3 years ago my girlfriend and I that had been together for 3 years had to part ways. What made it more difficult than just a normal break up was the fact that neither one of us wanted to end it but their were some other circumstances that made it incredibly difficult to go on. At the time I knew we needed to breakup because of our situation but it still sucked having to end it when we both knew we still loved each other. For the last three years I have wished we could be together but knew we couldn’t. She moved on and started dating someone new and I was genuinely happy for her to have someone she could have a fulfilling relationship with but I just kept wishing it was me that was with her even though I knew it wouldn’t work. For the last three years I have dated and had a couple of girlfriends but never quite had that same feeling ( yes I know you shouldn’t date if you’re not over someone but I knew it wouldn’t ever work with her so I was trying the old saying get over her by getting under someone else ). I did everything any person or website had to say about getting over someone and new it would take time but it just seemed like I wasn’t ever going to be truly over her. Then today I realized it has been a long time since I have thought about her and then when I did it wasn’t a “I wish I could have her again” it was a “I’m happy we had what we had”. Basically what I’m saying is the saying that only time will heal a broken heart is true it’s just that you never really know how much time you will need.

TLDR: Broke up with GF that I still loved and finally got over her 3 years later.
