Match and silence, what are they looking for exactly?

Hi all,

I find it odd, that girls (maybe this happens with both sexes, I don't know) don't reply to that first message. They, don't want to message first and the message they receive has to be more than just a hello, hey, hi etc. Even after this they don't bother to reply.

You can't come on too strong in the first message, but it seems that they want to be impressed/humoured to a certain extent, but not offended. What is even the point? I can't see the sense in it. Can anyone solve this mystery for me??? It seems to me, you can't win no matter what you do..
