Should I assume he’s not going to get in touch again?

I (25F) reconnected with a guy (27M) I had a crush on in high school recently by sliding into his DMs on instagram. He seemed into it, which was very exciting, and we decided to do a Facetime date. He ended up backing out because he was going through some sort of crisis that hit right before quarantine and he was still trying to find himself. Basically he said he wasn't ready for it. I agreed to move slower and just get to know each other over text. My friends said this was a bad sign but I ignored it, choosing to believe that he was still interested.

His texts were fewer and farther between after that and he did cite this said crisis again and said that he wasn't looking for a relationship right now. I said that's fine and that I'd be happy being friends. A few days after he said that he still was into me but that he was looking for more of a FWB type of deal. Again, I said I'm down for that and a few days later he texted me asking me to possibly come over later on, but it had gotten to 1:30am and I hadn't heard from him so I said I was going to bed. No answer.

Then he just didn't answer my texts for a week or so and I messaged him again asking if he was okay and what's going on. His reply was "Hey I'm good, don't stress. Just taking time alone. I'll be in touch. Thanks for checking in though." Then I said, "Okay I hope I haven't been a bother!" and he said "You haven't at all!"

This was a week ago. I'm still seeing other people but I really like him. Should I just go on to assume that he may not talk to me again? I'm wondering because I've been in these types of situations before where a guy will say he'll get in touch and then doesn't, but says so to cushion the blow. I just don't really know how to feel.
