I (27f) have struggled with being affectionate, I'm not very sweet. I have never been called mean or cruel or anything, but romance and overly sweet actions and words are not a norm from me. I can fake or force them on occassion if I have to, but I dislike pretending so I am reluctant to do so often. When I start a relationship with a man I always warn them thay I'm not sweet or affectionate and they say it's fine and they dont care, but then almost all of them end up threatening to break up over it.
I once was told "you're the best gf I've ever had, but its also like you don't care." And he broke up with me bc my actions were ok, but my tone was never sweet and also mentioned we had sex often enough but it was never romantic.
Im talking to a man now that I am very interested in and worried I will not be sweet enough for him. If you were in their shoes would you prefer occassional forced sweet/romantic behavior and words?
I am aware of my lacking in this regard and try to make up for it other ways. I buy things for people when I'm in relationships and try to spoil people in other ways like cooking and cleaning and always show respect etc. But not affection like random kisses or compliments out of the blue. It does not occur to me to do these things. Im also very literal and do not notice if someone is upset, so I miss some emotional social cues. If I ask "are you upset" and you say "no" then I no longer concern myself with it. I believe people should just be honest and clear but it has been pointed out to me that it can be difficult for people so I need to be more aware and read into things better.
I have been told that I don't care about their feelings bc I address things too directly and literally. But it is not on purpose, it is how I think. I am always open to talk through things, but even my friends will hear a conversation and say "you're not wrong but you could have been more sensitive."
I am willing to learn and improve, but i don't want to force myself to be overly conscious of every little thing and have to over think my relationships all the time either.
I have stopped pursuing potential romantic partners when they made jokes like "oh i know you're secretly sweet" or "I'm sure I can bring out your sweet side" bc I know they don't get it and will end up disappointed, but what about those who say its fine? then it isn't?
The guy im talkimg to (32m) says he understands and isn't bothered but I've heard that before. Is it enough for me to just provide the warning prior even though it hasnt been enough in the past? Or do I need to force certain thought processes and behaviours?
Where is the line in this case between bettering yourself and changing/faking who you are?
