This is a bit of an awkward situation. So back in freshman year of college, I met this girl when she was selling her football game ticket to me. we added each other on Facebook first, and later met up and talked briefly when she gave me the tickets. I had a huge crush on her the moment I saw her, I thought she was the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen and her smile literally melts my heart. After that, we kept running into each other once in a while throughout college, and she always recognized me and gave me a huge smile and waved at me every time we ran into each other, But been super shy and socially awkward as I was back then, all I did was smile and wave back at her. I didn’t dare to walk up to her and have a little chat, or even said anything as simple as “Hey, how’s it going?”. And that’s it, that’s all the interactions we had during college. Now I’m 2 years into my PhD program in another school all the way across the country, and she just got into a PhD program in the same school we went for our undergrad (Saw her Facebook post, we’re still Facebook friends). When I saw her Facebook post about her Master’s graduation, when I saw her beautiful smile again, I realized my crush on her has never faded! After all these years she’s still probably the most beautiful girl, with the sweetest smile I’ve ever met. When I scroll through her Facebook I saw that we’re born the same year 1 day apart! And we actually have a lot of things in common! I can’t help but think what if she is “the one” and we’re meant to be together! Then I realized that just all wishful thinking, now we’re both in PhD programs living thousands of miles away from each other, what are the odds that we cross paths again? We probably have a few mutual friends on Facebook but they’re nothing but acquaintances to me and I can’t possibly rely on them to somehow link us up one day. I regretted so much that I was so shy and awkward back then and wasted so much opportunities to get to know her or become friends with her. Now all I can think is that if we ever cross path again I swear I would grasp that opportunity and go talk to her. But for now, what can I do besides sitting here and sigh, hating my young, dumb and shy college self…
