THE AGE OLD QUESTION: What does it ACTUALLY mean when your ex consistently watches your Instagram stories?

I broke up with my 4- year ex about a week ago. I was the “dumper” but it was one of those situations where even though I ultimately dumped him I did so after he got indecisive about moving forward in our relationship (we were talking about moving in and he got cold feet last minute) so leaving was kind of my only option. We’ve been no contact since the break up apart from making plans for me to pick up stuff from his house, and also me apologizing for some things I said in anger (nothing too bad, it wasn’t a blow out fight or anything but some unkind words got used that I felt badly about later) in a very short text which he ignored. Still, every time I post an Instagram story his handle pops up as a viewer despite that he is actually not responding to any communication except “can I come get my stuff this week?” 24 hours after I sent it.

So this is something I’ve always wondered. What does it ACTUALLY mean that people watch your stories. I know I sometimes just scroll through everyone’s without thinking about it, but if I were actively ignoring a person I would skip theirs since I’d know they’d see I watched it.

So pardon me but, wtf??
