The Single Most Difficult Lesson I’m Learning About Relationships

I'm a 41 year old divorced man. I've been married, and I've been in love (not to the same person, unfortunately) I'm active in dating and I thoroughly enjoy getting to know women regardless of what kind of connection we end up sharing. And I am learning one incredibly painful reality:

Everything in life is for a season. Even relationships.

Friendships come and go – rarely do friendships last longer than a season of life. Co workers, neighbors, school friends, all come and go. Statistics show that the vast majority of relationships are centered around a commonality, and if that commonality fades, so does the relationship.

But what I'm learning is that is also true with love – even "true" love. It might last months, maybe years, maybe even decades. Just because it doesn't last forever doesn't mean it wasn't true love. And maybe putting that type of expectation on relationships creates extra pressure instead of allowing us to be present with the gift of the now.

I can allow the love of my life to be the love of my life, and move forward. Just because it's over doesn't mean it wasn't real. And I can cherish what I know what genuine and beautiful, even as I grieve the loss. She was perfect for me, in that season.

Everything has a season.
