Unpopular Opinion: Dropping Hints

In a world dominated by social media and phone use, dropping hints to people you are talking to (ie. purposely not replying for long periods of time, sending short texts, dodging attempts to hangout without offering another time, etc) are incredibly cryptic and open ended to the other party, and thus encourages mind games to subconsciously be played.

I believe this type of behavior in the dating world, instead of being direct and honest and communicating your intentions candidly, leads to hurt feelings, resentment, and confusion. I have been on both ends of this behavior several times and cannot see it any other way. There is no need to be ambiguous and unclear when you can simply be straightforward, even if it is blunt.

Think of it this way. If you had a good friend who was interested in you, you'd probably tell him straight up you aren't interested in dating, or that you're too busy to date, or whatever. But if you had a person who you are more unfamiliar with interested in you, you'd probably tell them that you're unavailable to make their date and never offer an alternative time, or purposely text them less or more vaguely in an attempt to try to make them not talk to you anymore.

"Dropping hints" in my point of view is just a way to avoid being direct and honest when that's exactly what most people want. Don't waste unnecessary time, you tell them you don't have interest in them the second you feel that way.
