I once went on a date with a seemingly very intelligent, well-educated Indian man in his twenties. I remember feeling pretty overwhelmed listening to him talk about his accomplishments and job (something in electrical engineering) while my still-in-college art student ass sat there wondering what I could possibly respond with. Thankfully, my nerves settled a bit, and at the end of the date, I felt comfortable enough to agree to a second date.
Admittedly, I did look him up online to see if his job location and title were legit, but inadvertently stumbled across his Instagram, and subsequently, his Facebook. There were pictures of him, but also pictures of him with a woman. At first, I didn’t feel comfortable asking my date about who she was because he’d probably find it creepy that I found his social media without giving them to me. Secondly, the pictures were taken weeks to months apart from each other; perhaps they were just friends or an ex girlfriend. (Still weird to leave up pictures of exes, but I was trying to think of a reasonable explanation.)
I didn’t think much of it afterwards, but did return back to them occasionally. The day for our second date drew closer, and I saw he had posted a new picture…of him and the woman (his WIFE) with their newborn baby.
I was floored because it possibly meant he went on a date with me just days before or after his own CHILD was born. I sent a few angry texts; to which he responded that he did have a wife and child, but was in the process of getting a divorce and joint custody.
Honestly, I didn’t believe the ‘divorce’ narrative because he never told me he was even married or having a child. I get some people want to keep drama in their private life hidden, but that’s something I feel like you have to let the person you’re dating know.
I thought about contacting the wife, but decided not to. In case he was lying about getting a divorce, she just had a child and I didn’t want to put more stress onto her. Maybe he was telling the truth, but I didn’t stick around to find out. That was just too big of a bombshell for me to mentally handle.
