What is the proper way to begin a conversation between someone new?

I’m a bit new to dating after coming out of a 6 year relationship a while back. I’ve come to terms with everything that happened, took the time to work on myself, and now I’m ready to jump back into the dating scene. The tough part? I work at a children’s home. My schedule is rolling so I never have the same days off. With my schedule the way it is, and me only having six full weekends off a year, it is tough for me to go out and actually meet people. (Quarantine obviously isn’t helping either)

I’ve come across a girl. Goodness she is gorgeous. We went to high school together, but never really had a conversation. I’ve always known who she was, but I have no idea if she knows who I am. Regardless I know how almost every woman’s direct messages look.

My concern with writing someone of the opposite sex a message is that no matter what I say I feel that I immediately get grouped into a group of desperate guys that are only trying to hook up or have a fling. I’m genuinely just trying to get to know her, go out once all this mess is over, and see where things go.

Am I over thinking the action of messaging someone?

How does a guy like myself write/send a message that separates themselves from every other male with a way to send a direct message?
