What Not To Do (featuring My Parents)

Dad is cheating on Mom.

Why? Mom nags, picks on the dinners he cooks, complains about how he manages money, and won’t have sex anymore.

Dad is also developing Dementia and refuses to get treatment. Dad gets a boner from seeing ME. It’s an accident but he doesn’t stop it. Dad falls for every get-rich-quick scheme he sees, paid $5k to somebody on the internet for some stock market scam, etc. Won’t listen to anybody.

Mom and Dad met in Catholic Church in the 80s. They broke up several times when they were dating, mostly due to racist shit Dad said and Mom throwing temper tantrums about it. But they always got back together because…….eh. Meeting people is hard and old habits are hard to break. Dad had a car and Mom didn’t have a driver’s license. Dad was military and had money and Mom was the last of her siblings that was single.

After they had kids Mom went through early menopause, and she beat the living shit out of me as a child when she was in a bad mood. I got a concussion and still have migraines from being thrown down the stairs. I still have scars from where she cut me with knives. Dad pulled her off me. They had screaming fights about it. Now they both claim it never happened.

I subtly ask Mom if she cares if Dad maybe has a theoretical girlfriend. She just rolls her eyes and goes “He’s 66. He can have all the girlfriends he wants” implying he’ll never find one. I catch her crying.

I pray they divorce but they never will.

I will never have my own children because I’m terrified to pass them the mental illness and violent impulses I carry.

It is better to be single your whole life then to end up in this situation as old people.

My parents would 100% have found partners better suited for them if they had trusted their instincts and broken up.

You can’t predict things like menopause and dementia but you can definitely predict racism, personality conflicts, lack of mutual interests, opinions on child discipline, history of infidelity, and a million other issues.

Mom would have gone back home to South America and found someone nice there. Dad would have found a probably similarly racist blonde and they would have made nice military brat babies and we would not have been born into the nightmare caused by their cooperative indifference.

It is better to be single then it is to stay in a relationship that you know in your heart is the wrong one.
