What’s a good way to keep a level head with someone whom you have alot of history with but things in the past got messy?

Alot of history between her and I. I can tell we both still have alot of feelings for one another. Years ago things ended badly but it seems a reconnect might be happening. What are good ways to keep a level head and protect myself?
