Why do guys grow distant?

I started dating this guy in February, around Valentine's Day. We went on two dates before things ended bc he was going back to his hometown and didn't want to do long distance.

Come end of March/early April, he reaches out to me again wanting to get back together. At first, I was on the fence but the quarantine loneliness got to me and I said sure. We did long distance for about 2 months, then he came back to where I live for about a week and we went on a quarantine dates.

It was also my birthday around this time. He didn't get me much, a bag of Hershey's and a card. At that time, it's still early on in our relationship so I took it as a sweet gesture.

Then he went back to his hometown again. This was a little more than a week ago. Now he hasn't texted me or called me for 3 days. I've been trying to give him space that he needs and time, but honestly he hasn't said a thing to me to indicate that he needs his space or time. If anything, this whole time he's been the one actively pursuing me and initiating conversations. Now it's silence and when I do I initiate conversation, he leaves me on read.

I'm trying to give him space and time if that's what he needs, but at the same time, I can't help but think of worst case scenarios and it's worsening my anxiety.
