Why make it awkward?

I have a question for the ladies. Why is it always awkward after a guy shots his shot and misses because you not interested in him? For example the chick I gave my number to at the store made it awkward next time I saw her. Going into shooting my shot I knew it would be a longshot she was intrested in me. She never hit me up nor did she verbally reject me. Since I never her from her I take that as rejection which is cool I move on to the next. Anyway I went into the store the week after to do my normal shopping day and she was in the same aisle as me which in which (I was there first). She didn't say hi like she normally would do when she see me with a big smile before I gave her my number. I said hi to her then she was like "oh hi". Then I was getting ready to check out which there was a lady before me and he cashier chick had to walk past me to get to her register but didn't look at me she turned her down and scratched her neck as if she was disappointed with me? In the end I still had to be face to face with her to pay for my food and she didn't say much. Why can't someone shoot their shot and get rejected but it not be awkward afterwards. I'm cool I've been rejected so many times and yes it's getting old but why can't woman talk to the guy like she use to do before she rejected him it's always awkward.
