Would you go to someone’s place for a hookup without meeting them in a public place?

Maybe I’m just not fit for the online dating scene, but I feel really sketched out when someone invites me over to their place only talking on the app for a couple hours or so. Does anyone do this? Is it safe? What should the response be if you’re not comfortable?
