When dating, please be proactive in deciding whether you want a relationship or not…don’t confuse the person you’re dating

I have been dating somebody since January, it was so great at the beginning, and I really like him. I was honest about wanting a relationship/looking for something long term on date three. He seemed to be okay with it so we kept dating.

Come time for the commitment talk, he wanted time, I gave it to him. He seemed confused and I get that sometimes people need more time. But after a couple of conversations, his confusion wasn’t about me, it was about wanting to be in a relationship at all. I told him to start being proactive about it, and he did.

Today, after consideration he wanted to stop seeing each other. I feel so saddened, I thought we had a connection. Though I agreed with the decision, and if he hadn’t reached it, I would have walked away myself. But it really sucks.

What sucks more and its something he failed to tell me is that his “relationship that ended badly” happened only a couple of months before meeting me. And ending badly meant that the ex that he lived with him destroyed his things, locked him out and his brother had to fly in to help him with it all.

I never stood a chance. I could’ve been perfect and that kind of experience would have left him not ready for more that soon.

Had he proactively thought about this, had more self reflection and self awareness, the hurt I am feeling could have been avoided. I don’t think it was intentional, I do think that it hurt could have been avoided entirely.

So here is me venting and telling everyone out there, that please be proactive, because the person you are dating has feelings too.

Feeling as though I blew it because of miscommunication but I don’t think I’m entirely wrong about communicating that I want a relationship

I’ve been seeing someone for a few months (early Feb), but a couple of those months were in the pandemic. We decided to hit pause to not being to see each other but still kept in touch. I’ve been wanting to unpause now that the restrictions are easing.

I had the conversation to but it did not go well. He would not even consider us dating, which upset me. I had let him know early on im looking for a relationship. I asked him what we were even doing if he doesn’t consider us dating because we’re not friends, nor are we having just sex.

He expressed his hesitancy about being in a relationship and wanting more time to get to know each other.

All this was mainly miscommunications, he finally explained that dating = exclusivity = relationship to him, while to me they are three different stages.

Him being hesitant about being in a relationship meant, that he isn’t sure about relationships all together, not just wanting more time with me.

I believe we managed to clear it up, and I made it clear that I want to unpause and work towards a relationship proactively. I am not asking for one now.

He eventually agreed to hangout more to figure it out but also stated that he feels more pressure now and needs to think.

I feel like I blew it, I got upset because of miscommunication and turned up the pressure on him which will eventually cause him to bail – it’ll be my fault. At the same time I feel angry at him that I am not being unreasonable and his definitions are the ones that are skewed.

But most of all I feel vulnerable that I have put myself in a position where someone will make a decision on me.

Did I really blow it?

Edit: I feel like this could be a part of a crappy soap opera.
