I (35M) just took this Philosophy of Sex & Love class, and the general bent of the students (avg ages 18-25) was 'sex positive', polyamorous, and seemingly basically noncommittal. My ex girlfriend (25) of just over a year, who I genuinely thought was my lifelong love, recently left me, while flirting with other guys in front of me. She casually dropped hints at wanting to be 'poly' while we were together, then was in bed with another female from Tinder weeks after we split. We had something I thought was so incredibly meaningful, so important, pure, and rare. So many touching moments and deep love. Part of me wants to do what everyone says and appreciate those special moments we had, cherish them and use it as a learning experience. The very hurt part of me is tempted to just chalk it up to me being delusional, and that our connection was only special in my eyes.
Is this where the world's headed, or at? Commitment and LTR is supplanted by open marriages, hookups, FWB and openness to everything and everyone? There's no work to build truly strong, deep connections that'll give you loving company in old age, because it's easier to just laugh and hookup with randoms?
I personally want to find my dreamgirl to live the rest of my life with. Maybe that's unrealistic. I'm quickly entertaining the idea of just working on myself, suffocating that desire, and taking no woman that serious anymore. I invested SO much of my energy and love in this last girl, and after seriously discussing kids and marriage, she left, and appears to be so incredibly happy now. Why invest ever again?
